1 John 3:20 Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything. (NLT)

There is an old Scottish proverb that says “Confession is good for the soul.” Easy to say, but hard to do, especially when we have wronged a friend and it has put up a wall in the relationship. When we do summon the courage to go talk to them, confess and ask for forgiveness we feel better, like a weight had been lifted off us. Many times that is what it takes to restore the relationship to what it once was.

When we mess up, or in spiritual terms “sin” against God, it separates us from Him. Guilt and shame prevent us from talking to God about that area of our life. Sometimes we even start avoiding God, the same way we avoid friends we have wronged. The thing with God we forget over and over again is that we can’t confess anything to Him that He does not already know. God is bigger than our feelings. God is great than our guilt. There is nothing you can tell Him that will make Him abandon you or love you any less. In fact opening up to God actually brings you closer to Him.

Spend a few minutes today talking to God (praying) and tell Him how you have been “messing up”. Share the things you feel guilty about. Don’t just tell God you are sorry, ask for forgiveness. See if your shoulders don’t feel lighter the rest of the day.
