Matthew 6:11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.
Bread is one of the oldest prepared foods, dating back to 10,000 BC. Cultures around the world from ancient times to today see bread as a symbol for the most basic necessities of life. In India, life’s basic necessities are often referred to as “roti, kapra aur makan” (bread, cloth, and house). In Europe a slang term for money is “bread” or “dough”. The “Bread-winner” is person in the home whose work is providing for the family’s needs. And the list could go on.
In America today many successful people view themselves as self-reliant or self-made. Many work hard for to put a roof over their families head, food on the table and to provide for the needs of the family. When you pray “Give us this day our daily bread” you are praying for God’s provision in your daily life. It is an acknowledgement that everything we have comes from Him and saying that you trust Him to take care of you. Today pray and thank God for the things He has provided for you. The roof over your head, the food in the pantry, the talent He has given you to do the work you do and earn a paycheck. If you are struggling in these areas then pray Matthew 6:11 on a daily basis and look for God to provide not what you want but what you need.
